Another About シド

Lead singer Mao has a wide range of vocal techniques; adept at expressing anguish in the medium tempo songs and ballads, he is at the same time able to sing with forceful intonation on the more energetic songs. It is obvious he handles the beautiful and unique melody lines of SID with complete confidence. Mao’s lyrics bring a unique perspective to familiar themes in order to create a worldview that gradually hooks listeners. When some of the band’s heavy songs approach their climax during their shows, he uses his “death voice” to exhibit a stunning presence on the stage.

Guitarist Shinji not only plays the electric guitar but also skillfully manages the acoustic guitar. His guitar playing brings vivid color to the wide scope of SID’s army of songs. The beautiful guitar lines provide much of the basis of one of SID’s attractions: its “anguish,” “sorrow,” and melancholic worldview. Shinji also plays the role of composer, weaving together many of SID’s songs, and he is overall a highly talented guitarist.

Bassist Aki supports the foundation of the band by maintaining a reliable bass line, but he occasionally drifts into melodies to give more depth to the songs. Aki is also known for his aggressive stage act. He is one of the main composers of SID.

Drummer Yuya adapts his drumbeat with precision according to the song, and his playing is ripe with a sense of speed. He projects dynamism to the songs on a grand and breathtaking scale. Yuya’s drumming can exhibit different kinds of expression as it adjusts from up-tempo songs to mellow songs, and even to ballads. His play is emblematic of the shape-shifting nature of SID’s musical style. When he composes, Yuya creates sounds that are highly accented and have a tendency to hook the listener. In many ways he is the band’s “mood maker.”

Each of the members writes their own blog, and Mao and Shinji use Twitter, while Aki maintains a Facebook page. Mao has more than 180,000 Twitter followers, which include fans not only from Japan but also various countries in Asia and South America. There is no shortage of heartfelt comments urging the band to “come play in our country!”
